Prátah Smarámi Stotram - by Adi Shankaracharya

This is a Divine meritorious triad of verses (3 verses),

The fruition of uttering this Stotram / Vedantic prayer will consecrate the thoughts, words, and deeds to attain Jivan Mukti (Liberation).

STOTRAM / VERSES

1^st verse:

Prátah smarámi hrudi samsphuradátmatattvam

saccitsukham paramahamsagatim turèyam

yatsvapna jágarasussuptamavaiti nityam

tadbrahma niskalamaham na cha bhutasañgha.

At dawn, that is this early morning,

I remember the Ultimate Reality that is the SELF,

shining brilliantly in the heart

That is existence-consciousness & bliss,

The goal of Paramahamsa sannyasins (sages)

which is Turiyam (the Fourth state) -

‘THAT’ (Turiyam) which is always aware of

all the other three states of dream,

and waking and deep sleep.

THAT, Brahman, which is indivisible I AM, 

not the aggregate of the five elements (ether, air, fire, water & earth).

2^nd verse:

Pratarbhajámi manasá vacasámagamyam

vacho vibhánti nikhilá yadanugrahena

yamneti neti vacanair nigamá avocam-

stam devadevamajam achyutam áhur agryam.

At dawn, ie., this early morning, I chant

the profundity of THAT, which is unattainable by 

the manas (the mind) and Vak (speech),

but by the Grace of WHICH, all words shine.

THAT, which the scriptures declare

through the words:

‘neti’ (not this),

‘neti’ (not this),

THAT, Deva Deva (The Ultimate Divine),

they say, is unborn and unchanging.

3^rd verse:

Prátarnamami tamasah paramarkavarnam

pürnam sanátanapadam purushottamaakhyam

yasminnidam jagadaseshamaseshamurtau

rajjvaam bhujamgama iva pratibhasitam vai.

At dawn I surrender and bow down to THAT,

which is called the Highest Self - 

That is beyond darkness,

and effulgent like the Sun,

the ever-ancient goal which is

the plenary reality -

THAT, the residue-less form (i.e. the whole)

in which the entire universe is made manifest,

like a serpent in a rope.

Phala-sruti (Fruition):

Slokatrayamidam punyam lokatrayavibhusanam

pratahkale pathedyastu sa gacchetparamam padam.

This Divine meritorious triad of verses (3 verses),

the ornament of the three worlds -

The one who reads at the time

of dawn attains the state of Parama padam (liberation).

This is the phala-Sruti (description of the fruit)

of this Vedantic prayer.

It is a eulogy of the prayer

whose purpose is to consecrate

the thoughts, words, and deeds

of the individual so that the one

attains Jivan Mukti.
